WRAITH

After our morning jog, Ann fixed me breakfast. Not wanting to leave her by herself, I convince her to come with me to an electronic store. Once upon a time, I’d make a bug detector myself, but in this age of technology, there’s no need. You can buy a relatively cheap one easily enough.

“Hello, sir, how may I be of service?” asks the salesclerk.

“I’m looking for an RF sniffer device.”

His eyes widen slightly, then he smirks. “Certainly, sir, come this way.” Ann rolls her eyes at me, and I wink at her. “Do you think someone has bugged your home?”

I lower my voice and say, “My daughter is being stalked, and I think the bastard may have broken into our house to spy on her. I found a nanny cam in a teddy bear in her room.”

The smirk falls off his smug face. “Jesus, really?”

“Yeah.”

He reaches out and hands me one. “This one is good, and the price won’t break the bank.”

Looking over the specs, I can see it will do what I need it to do, and he hasn’t tried to sell me the most expensive one either.

“I’ll have two.”

“Dad, do you have what you’re looking for?”

I nod. “Yeah, honey.”

Ann smiles at the salesclerk, and he goes a shade of red. “I hope everything works out.”

“With your help and this…” I say, holding up the device. “It will.”

The clerk stands a little straighter and walks us to the cashier. “Have a good day.”

I pay the cashier one hundred twenty dollars, including tax, and we walk out into the sunshine.

“He’s looking at me with pity.”

I glance over my shoulder and shrug. “Does it matter? He doesn’t know you.”

“I’m not a victim, Dad.”

This stops me in my tracks.

No, she’s not a victim.

Ann’s a survivor.

Ann’s a warrior.

“I know that.” I place an arm around her shoulders. “You have nothing to prove.”

Ann nods, but from the way she’s looking at me, I can tell there’s something she’s not voicing.

“What’s the plan?”

I release her and hold up the bag. “We’re going to sweep the apartment and see what we can find.”
